The Secret to Success
Nature is Successful
It is interesting to look at the natural world and see how every animal is successful at living and creating their lives. Think of any animal and you will see that they are successful at being themselves and living their lives. Albeit with small and specific differences to each animal, they all behave like they ‘should behave’. A cat behaves like a cat, a dog behaves like a dog, a fish behaves like a fish, a monkey behaves like a monkey… They are all successful at being themselves.
Mankind is Unsuccessful
When it comes to mankind, we do not see ‘success’. In certain aspects, we do behave like ‘humans’ – and we have also created and discovered certain things which one might claim to be examples of success. But, realistically, when looking at humanity as a whole and also at each individual, it is clear that there is something rather problematic. Why?
Why is it that so many billions of people struggle to be successful at creating the life they want for themselves? Why is it that so many people fail to ‘live the life of their dreams‘ and then accept their failure as if they have no other choice? Why is it that so many people accept themselves and their lives as ‘less than what it could be’?
We must be honest and face the facts:
- there are billions of people doing ‘jobs’ that do not fulfill them in any way – in fact, they cause all sorts of mental illnesses (from stress to depression) and also physical illnesses
- there are billions of people that have dysfunctional relationships with others and, most worryingly, with themselves
- we have caused major damages to the planet and the ecosystems which all kinds of plant and animal life depend on
An the list goes on…
As we look at society we can see that it is highly dysfunctional. The whole world system, as a reflection of us, is utterly dysfunctional. We have not been successful at creating a functional society that supports all. We are not successful at creating the lives that we want for ourselves nor the Utopian society that we have the potential to create. If this is not the definition of ‘humanitarian failure’, then I do not know what it is. Every other ‘living -thing’ on this planet (animal, plant, fungi, bacteria) is successful at being themselves. We humans are not. Why?
The Reason for our Failures
Why do we fail to succeed as individuals and as a whole? The answer lies within the one thing that distinguishes us humans from every other life-form: our LANGUAGE.
‘Language’ itself is not the reason for our failures, but rather how we utilise it.
We have the most advanced system of Language – and with it we also have a capacity to communicate in a way that is unique and different from any other animal. But ‘Language’ does not only mean ‘communication’- it is also what allows us to think, and therefore it defines what we say, what we do, and, ultimately, who we are.
Success is the outcome of using Language effectively.
The Formula for Success
In ‘simple terms’, the Formula for Success is:
To ‘Speak’; and to ‘Express’:
- The right words (the right meaning)
- In the right sequence
- At the right time
- In the right context
- In the right way
Therefore, the formula for failure is to:
To ‘Speak’; and to ‘Express’:
- Wrong words
- In the wrong sequence
- At the wrong time
- In the wrong context
- In the wrong way
It is as simple as this. If you speak and/or express the right words, in the right sequence, at the right time, in the right context, in the right way – then you will create precisely what you want.
Why am I not succeeding?
If you are not getting precisely what you want, then you must look at where you are going ‘wrong’:
- Is it your words?
Am I clear on the meaning of my words? Am I missing some words?
- Is it the sequence of words?
Am I ‘saying’ and ‘expressing’ the words in the right ‘order‘? Is there ‘order’ in my words?
- Is it when you say/express them?
Is my timing right? Am I ‘saying’ and ‘expressing’ the words ‘too early’ or ‘too late’?
- Is it the context?
Do these words apply to this specific context? Are these words relevant to this situation?
- Is it the way you are saying/expressing?
Is my voice tonality and body language appropriate?
- Is it a combination of these?
Regardless of what situation you find yourself in, the way to improve yourself and your life lies within applying this formula effectively. Whether you are trying to be the best parent for your children, or a teacher struggling to get your students to perform, the solution is to understand this formula to deliberately apply, and to teach it to others – so that they too may understand how to improve themselves.
In the next two blogs I will give specific examples on how this simple formula is applied in any and all kinds of situation, from a simple interaction with a child, to running a business. You will also discover what is the ultimate success in life…
